What are the requirements to rent a motorbike from Phuket Scooter Rental?
🛵 Your Smooth Scooter Rental Checklist for Phuket!
Getting ready to hit the road? Here’s everything you need to know to make your rental process quick and easy with Phuketscooterrental.
Key Personal Requirements
| Requirement | Details |
| Passport Ready | Please bring your valid passport (with a current Thai visa or entry stamp). We’ll quickly make a copy for our records and return the original to you! |
| Age | You must be at least 21 years old to rent a bike. |
| Driver’s License (The Legal Part) | Technically, you must have an International Driving Permit (IDP) with the Category A endorsement (for motorbikes) to ride legally in Thailand. While we focus on getting you set up, please note that riding without a valid license is a traffic offense that could result in a 1,000 THB fine. Safety first! |
The Finances (Super Simple!)
-
Security Deposit: We require a refundable cash deposit when you sign the contract, ranging from 3,000 THB to 10,000 THB (depending on the bike model). This is simply a safety measure, and you’ll get it back in full once you bring the scooter back undamaged!
-
Rental Payment: The full rental amount is paid upfront. You can pay with:
-
Cash (Thai Baht or converted currency)
-
Scooter Handover
-
Check and Photo: Before you ride off, please take a video or photos of the scooter to record its current condition. This protects both you and us!
-
Full Tank Policy: Your scooter will be provided with a full tank of 91 or 95-octane gasoline. Please return it topped up and ready for the next adventurer!
-
Your Responsibility: Once you sign the agreement, you become the bike’s caretaker. You are financially responsible for the scooter in the event of any loss or damage during your rental period (wear and tear excluded, of course!).
Enjoy the beautiful roads of Phuket!
Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?
To be 100% legal according to Thai law and for your insurance to be valid, you should have an International Driving Permit (Category A). While many shops don’t check this, we recommend it to ensure you avoid police fines and stay fully covered during your adventure.
Do I need to leave my original passport as a deposit?
One of the biggest fears in Thailand is handing over your passport. At Phuket Scooter Rental, we have a No Passport Deposit policy. We only require a copy of your passport and a fair, transparent cash deposit. Keep your ID safe in your hotel; we trust our customers.
Are the scooters insured ?
- Rental scooters from Phuket Scooter Rental are
typically covered by only basic third-party liability insurance that covers damage and injury to others, not the rider or the vehicle itself. Some rental companies may offer a more comprehensive package, but it is crucial for renters to check their own travel insurance and have the correct international driving permit (IDP) for a motorcycle license.
Common insurance coverage-
- Third-party liability: Most rental shops offer compulsory liability insurance (RCO), which is legally required and covers bodily injury or property damage you might cause to other people and vehicles in an accident.
- Limited medical coverage: Some basic insurance policies may include limited medical coverage of around 50,00050 comma 000
50,000
Thai Baht for injuries in an accident, but this may not be enough for serious injuries.
- No vehicle coverage: The insurance provided by most rental companies does not cover damage to the rented scooter itself, including theft or mechanical issues. This means you will be responsible for all repair costs.
What you should do- Check your rental agreement: Carefully read it and ask Phuket Scooter Rental what is and isn’t covered before you sign.
- Verify your license: Ensure you have a valid international driving permit (IDP) for category A motorcycles, as your travel insurance will likely not cover you if you don’t have one.
- Purchase separate insurance: It is highly recommended to buy your own travel insurance or comprehensive rental insurance that includes, check on Google:
- Personal accident coverage: To cover your own medical expenses in case of an accident.
- Vehicle damage coverage: To cover any damage to the rental scooter itself.
-
-
Can i change the motorbike after reservation ?
“Yes, of course you can!
Our goal is to make sure you’re totally comfortable and enjoying your time here. We are always flexible, so if you decide a different bike is a better fit for your adventures, just come in, and we’ll swap it for you!
Where can I read reviews that the previous customers have written?
1. The Need for Trust and Transparency
-
Trustworthy Over Cheapest: While price is a factor, customers are actively looking for “big, proper rental shops” and “trustworthy rental companies.” They are often willing to pay a little more for a clear, honest process.
-
The Inspection Process is Key: Customers are highly sensitive to the pre- and post-rental inspection. They take detailed photos and videos of the bike before renting it. They will instantly trust a shop that has clear procedures and distrust any shop that is “unorganized” or conducts inspections out of sight.
-
Transparency is Service: Your customers appreciate clear, written contracts and honest communication. They value services that go above and beyond, such as reliable support or pick-up/drop-off services. A company that is expat-run, for instance, is often seen as a sign of transparency and good service by a segment of this market.
2. The Focus on Long-Term Reliability and Safety
-
Safety Conscious (or Learning): Many riders, particularly tourists, are not highly experienced. They are looking for advice on driving defensively, handling steep hills, and using both brakes. They know the roads are dangerous and are focused on reliable helmets and well-maintained bikes (good tires, working brakes).
-
Legal & Insurance Concerns: They are aware of police checkpoints and the requirement for an International Driving Permit (IDP). They also know that insurance claims can be denied without the proper license. Your long-term lease customers will be especially sensitive to legal and insurance issues, as a prolonged stay increases their risk exposure.
-
Long-Term Reliability is Non-Negotiable: For a short-term rental, a minor mechanical issue is an inconvenience. For a 3-month to 1-year lease, a mechanical issue is a major disaster. They require a bike that is meticulously maintained and reliable, especially given the “huge discounts” are meant to secure a hassle-free experience.
You’re looking for a stress-free experience that starts with a handshake of trust and ends with a smooth return. They don’t just rent a bike; they invest in their mobility, safety, and peace of mind during their time in Phuket.
- To give you the right impression of our customers, you can read their writing on TripAdvisor and Google.
Your rentals fees are higher, why?
That’s a great question, and we certainly understand that there are different price points in the Phuket rental market. While our rates might be a little higher than some, it reflects the full value and peace of mind we deliver to our guests and property owners.
You can then follow up with specific reasons that differentiate your service:
-
Exceptional Quality & Maintenance: “We only manage high-quality, well-maintained properties. Our rates include a strict, proactive maintenance schedule and immediate support to ensure everything in your rental is working perfectly throughout your stay. This saves you the time, stress, and unexpected costs of dealing with issues yourself.”
-
Comprehensive Service & Support: “Our pricing includes a premium service package. This often covers things like:
-
24/7 Guest Support for any emergencies.
-
Professional Cleaning (often more frequent or to a higher standard than basic services).
-
Dedicated On-Island Concierge services to help with everything from airport transfers to booking tours and securing reservations.”
-
-
Prime Location & Unique Features: “Often, our portfolio includes properties in prime, high-demand locations—like beachfront or properties with superior amenities and unique features—which naturally command a higher price. We focus on curating the best rental experiences on the island.”
-
Transparency and Security: “We are fully licensed, and our contracts are clear and transparent. Our prices ensure the property is fully insured and legally compliant, giving you complete peace of mind during your entire rental period.”
Do you deliver the motorbike at the airport or pier ?
“That’s a fantastic question! We currently don’t offer direct scooter delivery or pickup at Phuket Airport (HKT) or any of the main piers. We prefer to ensure the quality and safety of your rental handover, and that’s best done either at our main location or directly at your accommodation.”
🛵 Our Delivery and Pickup Options
-
Option 1: Free Hotel Delivery (Based on Availability)
“We are happy to bring your chosen scooter directly to your hotel, resort, or villa in the local area, free of charge, based on our delivery schedule and availability. This is often the most convenient option!”
-
Option 2: Visit Our Shop (Recommended for Immediate Pickup)
“If you need the scooter right away, we would be delighted to have you pick it up at our Phuket Scooter Rental shop, located in Wichit. The rental process is quick and smooth here, and it gives us the chance to properly brief you on the bike and local riding tips.”
-
Option 3: Directions to Our Shop
“For your convenience, our address is: Phuket Villa, 3, 69/22 Soi Phon Charoen 1, Wichit, Phuket 83000. You can easily find us on Google Maps by searching for Phuket Scooter Rental.” “The best way to get from the airport/pier to our shop is by Grab, a local taxi, or a prepaid transfer. It’s typically a very straightforward and affordable journey.”

We want to rent a scooter for 1 or 2 days. Is this possible, can you bring to our hotel ?
🛵 Renting for 1 or 2 Days
Customer: “We want to rent a scooter for 1 or 2 days. Is this possible, can you bring to our hotel?”
Your Response:
“Absolutely! We are happy to rent a scooter to you for just one or two days.
However, for rentals less than 3 days, we are unfortunately unable to offer hotel delivery. We hope you understand that our delivery service requires a minimum commitment.
Easy Pickup: You are more than welcome to visit our headquarters to personally collect your scooter! We’d love to meet you and get you set up with your perfect ride. There is no obligation to rent when you visit, but we’ll have your reserved scooter ready to go!
Am I responsible for an accident and/or any damage?
“Yes, as the person leasing the bike, you are responsible for the vehicle during the entire rental period. This is standard procedure for motorbike rentals.
We want to make the process as straightforward and fair as possible if damage does occur:
The Most Cost-Effective Solution
To help you minimize repair costs, we recommend the following:
-
You Repair It Yourself: This is always the cheapest option. If damage occurs, we can immediately recommend a trustworthy local repair shop. You simply get the damage fixed and return the scooter to us in the same condition you received it. Please inform us right away if the bike is damaged.
If We Handle the Repair
If you prefer that we manage the repairs after the rental period, the costs will unfortunately be higher due to the logistics and time involved:
| Item | Cost | Details |
| Repair Cost | Varies | Paid directly to the repair shop. We will both attend to assess the damage. |
| Delivery Fee | 1000 THB | Fee to take the damaged scooter to the repair shop. |
| Collection Fee | 1000 THB$ | Fee to pick up the scooter after repairs are complete. |
| Lost Rental Income | Various | The equivalent of the day rental fee for the time the scooter is out of service. |
Our Goal: We strive for transparency. If we handle the repairs, we will ensure both parties go to the repair shop together to confirm the damage and cost before any work is done.”

Is riding a motorbike in Phuket something for me?
-
🛵 Should I Rent a Motorbike in Phuket?
We genuinely believe that renting a scooter or motorbike is the absolute best way to explore and get around the island! It offers incredible freedom and efficiency, transforming your holiday.
The Benefits of Riding with Us:
-
⏳ Save Time & Money: A scooter drastically cuts down travel time between A and B, giving you more hours to relax on the beaches. You’ll also save money by avoiding expensive taxis and tuk-tuks.
-
🏖️ Explore at Your Pace: Say goodbye to waiting in traffic while the taxi meter runs! You get to navigate yourself, stop whenever you like, and truly soak in the beautiful views and beaches.
-
🥳 Maximum Enjoyment: Riding your own scooter gives you the freedom to discover hidden gems and experience Phuket like a local.
⚠️ A Word on Safety & Experience
While we encourage riding, your safety is our top priority. You must be realistic about the driving conditions:
-
Experience is Essential: If you have no prior experience riding a motorbike or scooter back home, we strongly advise against renting one here. It’s simply not safe to learn on Phuket’s busy roads.
-
Phuket Traffic is Unique: Be aware that traffic, especially in busy areas like Patong and Phuket Town, is hectic and chaotic compared to what you may be used to. Always pay close attention to everything happening around you.
-
Helmet Rule (Crucial!): There are risks involved in driving in every city, and Phuket is no exception. You must wear your helmet at all times. While you will see others riding without one, remember this simple truth: you might survive a broken arm or leg, but losing your head means it’s game over. We insist on helmet use for your safety.
In short: If you have riding experience and drive safely, you will love the freedom a rental offers!
Do you have experience riding a motorbike, or would you like to know more about the best routes to explore safely?

How far can I drive with the rental scooter?
🗺️ Scooter Kilometer Allowance by Rental Duration
Your complimentary daily riding distance depends on the length of your rental term:

| 15 to 20 days | 64 km/day |

If you rent a scooter for 12 days, your total complimentary travel allowance is 12 days times 72 km = 864 km over the entire rental period.
If you rent a scooter for 18 days, your total complimentary travel allowance is 18 days times 64 km = 1152 km over the entire rental period.
If you rent a scooter for 27 days, your total complimentary travel allowance is 27 days times 56 km = 1512 km over the entire rental period.

“Of course!
We include one or two basic standard helmets at no extra cost. We’ll let you choose the type that feels most comfortable: either a scooter helmet with a protective window or a traditional open-face style.”
Is renting a scooter in Phuket legal and insured?
Yes, provided you rent from a professional scooter rental company. Every bike in our fleet is 100% legal and safe. This means taxes are paid, the registration is current, and basic insurance is included. We also conduct a full technical safety check before every rental to ensure brakes, tires, and lights are in perfect condition.
What is the best scooter for two people and steep hills?
For couples or riding up to the Big Buddha, we recommend a bike with at least 150cc–160cc. The Honda PCX 160 or the Honda ADV 160 (2025 model) are the top choices. They offer the power needed for Phuket’s steep hills and the comfort of premium suspension for a smooth ride.
Can I get a phone holder or a top box with my rental?
Absolutely. We know navigating with Google Maps is essential. During our easy booking process, you can choose from 15+ customization options. We can install heavy-duty phone holders, extra-large top boxes for your helmets/beach gear, and even child helmets and beachmats.
How much does it cost to rent a scooter in Phuket?
Think of it as “Freedom for the price of a lunch.” While prices vary by model and season, a high-quality, safe scooter usually costs less than a standard meal at a tourist restaurant. It’s the most cost-effective way to avoid expensive taxi fares and see the island on your own schedule.
What happens if I have a flat tire or a breakdown?
Don’t worry. Unlike small roadside shops, we provide full support. If you experience any technical issues, our team is just a WhatsApp message away. Because our bikes are maintained by our in-house mechanics, breakdowns are rare, but we are always ready to assist.
